Hallucinations in sleep - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hallucinations in sleep consist of particularly vivid sensations or illusions, which can occur at the beginning of sleep (hypnagogic) or at the time of awakening (hypnopompic).

These phenomena can affect the visual apparatus or other sense organs and are not easily distinguishable from normal REM sleep dreams.

Hallucinations, sometimes with bizarre or terrifying contents, can be mistaken for real, since they occur in a phase of transition between sleep and wakefulness.

Hallucinations can be associated with sleep paralysis and, like these, can be one of the symptoms of narcolepsy.
