Cochineal red A is a synthetically obtained azo dye; its color is similar to that obtained from scale insects. Cochineal red A is normally found in candies, syrups, ketchup sauces, canned salmon, effervescent drinks, candied cherries, popsicles, marzipan and jellies.
Risks: hyperactivity, asthma, urticaria, insomnia; there are reported cases of cancer found in some animals.
Less harmful than the natural compound for the health of consumers, cochineal red is however contraindicated especially for those who are allergic to aspirin and for asthmatics, as well as for children. Its use is not recommended in general because it could be carcinogenic.
ADI DOSE: 4mg per kg of body weight.
