When are intravitreal injections indicated?

The drugs currently approved and used for intraocular use are the anti-VEGF (ie anti- angiogenic against the growth factor of vascular endothelial cells produced in excess) and the cortisone drugs .

Antiangiogenic drugs ( anti-VEGF ) are used in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (moist or exudative form), diabetic retinopathy and macular edema (diabetic or caused by thrombosis of the retinal vessels). The anti-VEGF, in fact, are inhibitors of the formation of new retinal blood vessels, capable of slowing the progression of the disease.

Cortisonics, on the other hand, are mainly used in the management of some inflammatory diseases of the eye (for example: uveitis).
