The term parenteral refers to the administration of medicaments by injection through the integuments or directly into the circulation.

The parenteral route generally allows to have an effect in a short time, to administer medications inactivated orally, to intervene rapidly in emergencies, to administer nutritional solutions to patients who cannot normally eat.
