Definition

Benign prostatic hypertrophy (or hyperplasia) (IBP) is the increase in prostate volume, a chestnut-shaped gland responsible for producing an important liquid for male reproductive function. It is an almost physiological phenomenon in the male after 40-50 years. The growth of prostate tissue in many cases ends up compressing the urethra and thus blocking the normal outflow of urine; hence the classic symptoms of prostatic hypertrophy and some of its complications arise (recurrent urethritis, urinary calculi and kidney damage in the most severe cases). The causes of prostatic hypertrophy have not yet been fully clarified; it is assumed, however, that the hormonal influence - understood as the amount of sex hormones (androgens, estrogens) and sensitivity of the prostate to their action - plays a major role.
