Return of the nipple - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The nipples are normally protruding and pointed. In some cases, however, they appear introflexed, therefore falling into the breast even if stimulated manually or with cold. This anomaly can affect both men and women; furthermore, it may affect only one breast or both.

Nipple re-entry can cause aesthetic problems and interfere with normal breastfeeding.

Introflection can be a harmless phenomenon or indicate the presence of a more severe problem. If the nipple does not protrude, a malformation may be present from birth. Sometimes, the problem is due to the presence of too short galactophoric ducts which, in practice, hold the nipple towards the mammary gland. This anomaly, moreover, can be consequent to inflammatory processes or surgical interventions.

If the return of the nipple is associated with a blood secretion or the presence of a nodule, instead, it could be breast cancer.
