Münchausen syndrome: origin of the name

The Münchausen syndrome is a psycho-behavioral disorder that causes those affected to complain about diseases or non-existent symptoms, with the sole intention of putting themselves at the center of attention of family and / or doctors.

Sometimes, the will to show off is so strong that it induces some sick subjects to self-procure physical damages or to alter the diagnostic tests that concern them.

The unique name of this disorder refers to Baron Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen, a German aristocrat who lived in the 18th century and is famous for inventing fantastic adventures during the convivial evenings of his time.

The figure of the baron became so well known that several writers, in the following years, dedicated to him books that collected the most exciting adventures. Among the most famous enterprises, we remember: the journey to the moon and the fly on a cannonball.
