Treat yourself with the Cimicifuga

Botanical Name: Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nuttal

Part used: roots, rhizome

Common name: women's grass

Therapeutic properties: estrogen-like and anti-LH action (inhibition of pituitary LH secretion)

Therapeutic use:

  • climacteric and menopause (functional disorders such as hot flushes and vaginal dryness); premenstrual syndrome; menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea)

Examples of medical specialties containing Cimicifuga: Remifemin ®

NOTES: when Cimicifuga is taken for curative purposes it is essential to use defined and standardized pharmaceutical forms in active ingredients (in triterpene glycosides, calculated as 27-deoxyactein or actein), the only ones that allow to know how many pharmacologically active molecules are being administered to the patient. The fluid extract and the dye do not offer guarantees on the constancy of the active ingredients.

Cimicifuga: well established medical indications

Relieve the neurovegetative symptoms of menopause (such as hot flushes and sweating)

Indicative dosage in adult menopausal women:

  • Take, by mouth, 40-80 mg of drug or a dose of equivalent dry extract (standardized to 2.5-5% in triterpenes) per day. The correct dosage must be established by the doctor in relation to the patient's clinical situation. The therapeutic efficacy of these preparations may require, for manifestation, a period of use of more than two weeks.

    Example of herbal preparations:

    • Dry extract from Cimicifuga Racemosa (extraction ratio 5-10: 1; extraction solvent: ethanol 55% v / v)
    • Dry extract from Cimicifuga Racemosa (extraction ratio 4.5-8.5: 1; extraction solvent: ethanol 60% v / v)
    • Dry extract from Cimicifuga Racemosa (extraction ratio 5-10: 1; extraction solvent: propan-2-ol at 40% v / v)

NOTE: If symptoms persist or worsen during treatment with cimicifuga consult your doctor or pharmacist. Use for longer than three months requires medical supervision. Do not take during pregnancy and lactation.

The capsules should be swallowed whole, so neither suck nor chewed.

Cimicifuga Racemosa is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity towards one or more pharmacologically active substances contained in the extracts. Caution in case of use by patients with a history of liver disease.

Cases of liver toxicity have been reported following the use of cimicifuga, reported by the onset of symptoms such as loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and ocular sclerae, hepatic tenderness, nausea and vomiting, particularly dark urine. There have also been reports of isolated episodes of gastrointestinal disorders (diarrhea, stomach acid, dyspepsia) and of allergic reactions (hives, itching, rash, facial or peripheral edema).

Discontinue therapy and consult your doctor if signs and symptoms suggestive of liver damage occur. If vaginal bleeding or other side effects occur seriously, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do not take in combination with hormone replacement therapies, unless otherwise prescribed by a doctor. The plant contains salicylates, so it must not be taken by subjects allergic to acetylsalicylic acid.

Patients who are in treatment, or have been in the past, for breast cancer or other types of cancer should not take Cimicifuga Racemosa extracts.

For more information on the correct use of a specific product based on cimicifuga, and for the complete list of side effects, see the package leaflet that comes with the product. This information must always be read carefully before starting treatment.
