Definition

The bicorne uterus is a congenital malformation in which a duplication of the uterine cavity occurs.

This anomaly depends on an incomplete fusion of the Müller ducts present in the abdomen, during the embryonic life. Therefore, the upper part of the uterus is divided into two hemicities, converging in the lower part.

The bicorne uterus does not compromise fertility, but it can complicate pregnancy if the embryo implant occurs near the point where the uterine cavity diverges. This sort of "saddle" that remains, in fact, is little sprayed and the circulation of blood in the area of the plant may not be sufficient to ensure adequate nourishment to the fetus.

The bicorne uterus can also promote spontaneous abortions in the first trimester, preterm labor and fetal presentation abnormalities with labor dystocias: as the gestation progresses, in fact, the scarce elasticity of the uterine cavity does not allow us to adapt normally to the fetal volume increase, so the latter is expelled prematurely.

In order to avoid such complications, a surgical correction operation (metroplastic) may be indicated to bring together the two "horns" of the uterine cavity. During pregnancy, however, a cervical hoop may be applied.
