Is the multicentrum useful?

It is really difficult to express an unquestionable judgment on the usefulness of multivitamin and multimineral supplements.

In fact, the results of the studies that have investigated its efficacy, safety and side effects are too discordant; the opinions of the experts are equally discordant, even if more and more often positive judgments are read on the matter.

In the following paragraphs we analyze the main reasons that push doctors and consumers to support or deny the effectiveness and safety of these supplements.

WHY TAKE THE MULTICENTRUM

In literature there are numerous studies that warn of the general and worrying collapse of the nutritional power of food. The simple comparison of the first nutritional tables with the current ones shows a significant reduction in the dietary intake of essential nutritional factors, such as the vitamins and minerals present in the multicentrum. There are numerous reasons behind the phenomenon. First of all, the progressive impoverishment of the land, caused by the advent of chemistry, intensive cultivation, genetic selection and intense exploitation of the resources of the subsoil, with no crop rotation. All these factors have a negative impact not only on the nutritional power of plant foods, but also on that of the meat obtained from the animals that draw nourishment from them. As if that were not enough, the same animals live in overcrowded conditions, condemned to immobility, physical suffering and obesity, super-pumped with feed based on high-protein flour rather than left free to graze, and genetically selected to maximize profits.

To all this we add the transformations undergone by food during the agro-food chain, understood as that complex of productive structures that contributes to the production, distribution, marketing and supply of an agri-food product. The processes of refining and grinding, the long storage times, the inadequate conditions of transport and storage, the need to collect fruit and vegetables still immature, the demand for products out of their natural season and, last but not least, pollution, these are just some of the factors that contribute to the impoverishment of the food that arrives on our tables. Add to all this the excessive use of additives, which allow to save on the quality and quantity of the basic food.

Depending on the sources consulted, the drop in nutritional values of current food products compared to those of 20 - 30 years ago varies from 15 to over 50%. Here then that with the same calories, on our tables arrive much less vitamins and mineral salts than in the past, elements that would justify a regular and constant recourse to the multicentrum.

Finally, incorrect habits are increasingly widespread, increasing the need for vitamins and minerals, feeding chronic subclinical deficiencies, ie with symptoms that are not easily identifiable; these factors include: stress, special diets, sports, alcohol abuse, excessive use of laxatives and some special drugs - such as aspirin, antibiotics or anti-conventional pills - food intolerances, stress, smoking habits and excessive hygiene.

SOME POTENTIAL INDICATIONS OF MULTICENTRUM: malabsorption syndromes (celiac disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, gastrointestinal resections, atrophic gastritis, etc.), intense physical activity (agonism at high levels), pregnancy and lactation, anemic conditions due to iron deficiency, asthenia of unknown cause, not attributable to specific pathologies, diarrhea, use of antibiotics and digestive insufficiencies.
