E127 - ERITROSINA (CI 45430)
Erythrosine is the synthetic red dye of coal tar, containing iodine, therefore capable of causing thyroid disorders. In some countries, its use is prohibited because of the development of thyroid tumors in experimental animals when it is administered at high doses. Human consumption can also cause risks; it can in fact induce hyperthyroidism and sensitization to light, as well as asthma, hives, insomnia and allergies.
Currently, the use of erythrosine is still allowed as an additive within the European Union. It is commonly found in candies, canned fruit, popsicles, candied cherries, ice cream and biscuits.
ADI DOSE: 0.1 mg per kg of body weight.
