Definition
The swelling (edema) of the lips is due to the accumulation of fluids or an inflammation of the labial tissue.
Swollen lips can be the result of injury (eg sunburn), infection, insect bites or trauma.
Sudden labial edema is also a manifestation of food allergies, drugs (eg penicillin or codeine), insect bites or contact (cosmetics, latex, oral hygiene products, etc.). In this context, swollen lips can also be a symptom of anaphylaxis, a condition that requires immediate medical attention, especially if accompanied by itching, nausea, vomiting, hives, increased heart rate and breathing difficulties with cyanosis.
Sometimes, swollen lips are the result of generalized edema, most commonly caused by heart failure and kidney disease.
