Further indications

Hypochondria is a disorder that manifests itself involuntarily. It is typical to undergo continuous medical examinations and diagnostic tests, even turning to different doctors for the same problem.

The location, quality and duration of symptoms are often described in great detail, but usually they are not associated with the finding of physical anomalies.

Hypochondria can compromise social relations and work activity. The course is often chronic, fluctuating in some cases and stable in others.

Diagnosis is confirmed when symptoms persist for more than 6 months, despite the reassurance provided by a thorough medical evaluation and the exclusion of a depression or other mental disorder.

The management of hypochondria includes cognitive-behavioral therapy and the administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
