Introduction

Pimples on the chin represent an annoying skin disorder, usually (but not necessarily) related to acne and / or hormonal factors.

In fact, the pimples on the chin occur with greater incidence during adolescence; despite this, they can also occur in adulthood, particularly when hormonal imbalances or other predisposing factors are present. In older people, however, the onset of pimples on the chin and pimples in general is a rarer event.

In some cases, pimples on the chin do not require any kind of treatment to disappear; in others, on the other hand, it may be necessary to ask the doctor for advice and intervene with pharmacological treatments. Clearly, the decision to put into practice or not specific treatments and cures should be taken by the doctor or, even better, by the dermatologist following an accurate visit.

What are

What are Pimples on the Chin?

Pimples on the chin can be defined as skin lesions characterized by inflammation which, more often than not, is accompanied by bacterial infections . These lesions are in relief, have a generally round shape and can have variable dimensions. The consistency can be more or less soft, as can be present or not the classic white tip, peppered with sebum.

Although sometimes the word "pimples on the chin" is used to indicate any type of skin lesion whose characteristics are similar to those described above, in most cases, when we talk about pimples in this area of the face we want to indicate the manifestations acne or so-called white spots ( closed comedones ) that, therefore, will be taken into consideration during the article.

Did you know that ...

In addition to pimples intended as acne manifestations or as closed comedones that appear more or less sporadically, the chin is the seat of the face on which also pimples and millet grains can appear. Furthermore, the chin area is one of the main sites where pimples can occur during pregnancy and giant pimples .

Causes

What are the Causes of Pimples on the Chin?

The formation of pimples on the chin is correlated above all to an excessive production of sebum and to the inflammation of the sebaceous glands which can be associated with infections sustained by different bacteria, such as Propionibacterium acnes .

Hyperactivity and inflammation of the sebaceous glands can be caused or exacerbated by several factors. In particular, the appearance of pimples on the chin seems to be correlated above all to imbalances and alterations of normal hormonal levels . Not surprisingly, they tend to occur in patients of both sexes in the adolescent period and in female patients near the menstrual cycle or during pregnancy; that is to say in particular phases of life or periods in which hormone concentrations undergo considerable changes. However, hormonal factors are not the only ones that cause, promote or predispose to the onset of this skin problem. Indeed, other factors involved in the appearance of pimples on the chin are represented by:

  • Genetic predisposition ;
  • Incorrect and unbalanced diet, rich in very fatty and sugary foods;
  • Poor cleansing of facial skin.

In addition to the above, the appearance of pimples on the skin can also be favored by:

  • Excessive exposure to UV rays, natural or artificial (tanning lamps) as they are;
  • Use of cosmetics or make-up products containing substances occluding pores and skin;
  • Continuous manipulation of the chin with the hands (for example, continuous rubbing);
  • Stress conditions.

Finally, we recall that, in some cases, what are called pimples on the chin are actually cutaneous manifestations due to allergies or the application of poor quality products containing irritants .

Curiosity: Pimples on the Chin and Oriental Medicine

According to some oriental alternative medicines and, in particular, according to the Chinese one, the face is the "mirror" of the internal organs and the appearance of outbreaks or pimples represents the consequence of a malaise linked, precisely, to some of them. According to this medicine, each area of the face corresponds to a very specific organ or apparatus. In the specific case of pimples on the chin, their appearance would indicate the presence of problems in the reproductive system and the presence of hormonal disorders.

Symptoms

What symptoms do Pimples on the Chin cause?

Since the pimples on the chin are characterized by an inflammatory component, the typical symptoms induced by it consist of redness, swelling and pain . In some cases, however, it is possible that the pimples give rise to an itch of variable intensity instead of a painful stimulus; itching which, however, may evolve into pain as the inflammation and any infection proceed.

Finally, we must not forget the aesthetic discomfort that the presence of pimples on the chin can cause, especially when these are of considerable size and / or appear in large numbers.

Complications of Pimples on the Chin

Treatments and Treatments to Eliminate Pimples on Chin

The use of treatments and treatments to eliminate pimples on the chin is not always necessary. In fact, in the less severe cases in which the pimples occur sporadically, they tend to resolve spontaneously without requiring any type of intervention. If this does not occur and if the pimples on the chin represent an important acneic manifestation, the intervention of the doctor may be necessary.

Cosmetic Treatments

Proper cleaning of the skin is of fundamental importance, both when the pimples on the chin represent a problem that requires the intervention of the doctor, and when they occur sporadically and do not cause particular inconveniences, if not aesthetic.

Chin cleansing should be done daily with water and mild detergents, preferably a couple of times a day (morning and evening). Alongside this regular cleaning routine, to accelerate normal cell renewal, it may be useful to resort to the use of exfoliating cosmetics (scrubs or chemical exfoliants) at least once a week. However, it should be remembered that the use of cosmetic products of this type can only occur in cases of pimples on the chin that are not serious and that do not present complications.

Pharmacological Treatments

In the most severe cases of pimples on the chin, it is possible to intervene with pharmacological treatments. Even if there are medicines to counter acne and pimples that can be freely purchased without having to submit a prescription, it would be good to consult your doctor or dermatologist before using them.

However, among the drugs that can be used to eliminate pimples on the chin, we remind those based on benzoyl peroxide (Benzac®), a well-known active ingredient with comedolytic and antibacterial action .

In the most severe cases, however, the doctor may decide to prescribe corticosteroid drugs (to reduce inflammation) and / or antibiotic drugs (to fight bacterial infections) for topical use . In extremely serious cases, however, it is possible to evaluate a possible systemic therapy.

Engraving or Removal

In the presence of pimples on the chin of high dimensions that cause a very annoying symptomatology for the patient, it is possible to proceed with the incision of the same, in such a way as to favor the escape of the material contained in them (sebum, bacteria, cellular debris) and favor healing. Clearly, the incision must be made by the doctor using sterilized instruments . Do-it-yourself engraving is absolutely to be avoided, to avoid both damage (bleeding, injury, etc.) and complications (scar formation, spread of infection, etc.).

A similar speech regarding the removal of cysts, a result of the complication of pimples on the chin. In fact, the cysts must be removed with a small surgical procedure which is generally performed by the dermatologist in an outpatient setting.

Natural remedies

In the less serious cases, even the use of some natural remedies to eliminate the pimples on the chin could be useful. On the market there are various cosmetics based on natural extracts with a purifying, disinfecting and / or anti-inflammatory action .

Alternatively, the use of certain types of essential oils - such as, for example, lemon essential oil or lavender oil - can be useful, provided they are previously diluted in a light carrier oil or in a neutral cream.

Another natural remedy that can be very useful in the presence of pimples on the chin is represented by the clay and, more particularly, by the clay masks, generally with a marked purifying action. However, for more information, read the dedicated article: Acne: Natural Remedies.

Treatments against scars

In the event that pimples on the chin leave scars, it is possible to intervene with different types of aesthetic medicine treatments, such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, radiofrequency and laser therapy . Clearly, such treatments can only be performed by specialized medical personnel.

The choice to resort to one treatment rather than another depends on the extent and depth of the scar, just as it may depend on the results to be obtained.

Useful Tips

Useful Tips to Prevent or Facilitate Pimples Resolution on the Chin

To try to prevent or at least try to promote the healing of pimples on the chin, even if the doctor has already prepared the treatment with specific drugs, it may be useful to adopt some behavioral measures, such as:

  • Avoid crushing, breaking or cutting pimples on the chin . This practice - in addition to increasing the risk of scarring - can, in fact, favor the expansion of the infection to the surrounding skin areas, further worsening the situation.
  • Maintain a good level of personal hygiene and clean the face skin and chin in particular. In this regard, it is good to remember that to cleanse the skin of the face it is necessary to use specific products and especially delicate detergents and NOT excessively degreasing. In fact, if on the one hand cleansing serves to remove excess sebum and dirt; on the other hand, the use of products that are too aggressive and degreasing can dry out and irritate the skin, causing it to produce more sebum in an attempt to restore normal conditions. A greater production of sebum, in turn, could induce a worsening of the condition of pimples on the chin.
  • To avoid accidentally breaking the pimples on the chin, after cleansing, dry the affected area by dabbing and not rubbing, preferably with a soft towel .
  • Use quality cosmetics and make-up products, suitable for your skin type and not occluding.
  • Avoid excessive exposure to UV rays and, if exposed, use a sunscreen with a high protection index .
  • Adopt a balanced diet trying to avoid or limit heavily fatty foods and overly sweet or sugary foods.
  • Try, as far as possible, to reduce stress .
  • Avoid the use of grandmother's remedies whose efficacy, usefulness and safety of use are very dubious. A typical example of a remedy of this type that should NOT be adopted is the application of toothpaste on pimples.
  • Use drugs only if specifically prescribed by your doctor.

Please note

Of course, the aforementioned recommendations are not able to guarantee the total disappearance of the pimples on the chin. However, the adoption of a balanced diet, the maintenance of good personal hygiene, the avoidance of excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation and the correct and regular cleaning of the skin are useful precautions not only to prevent or promote disappearance pimples on the chin, but also to help maintain the well-being of the skin and the body in general.
