pseudostrabismus

There are cases in which the eyes may seem cross-eyed, but only because of particular conformations of the face. In this case we speak of pseudostrabismo .

The false perception of a strabismus is often found in newborns, especially in cases of premature birth. Newborn babies, in fact, can have a flattened and wide nasal bridge and a skin fold that tends to cover the inner corner of the eye (epicanthus), thus giving the impression that the eyes are deviated. However, these are facial features that tend to disappear with growth.

Pseudostrabismo is also observed in certain ethnic groups. Oriental eyes, for example, are characterized by the presence of epicanthic folds, so they can give the impression of being cross-eyed.
