Eyes reddened - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Reddened eyes

Definition

The redness of the eyes reflects a dilation of the superficial ocular vessels. This symptom may occur during infection, inflammation, allergy, trauma or high pressure at the eye level.

The most frequent causes of redness of the eyes include conjunctivitis (allergic or infectious), corneal abrasions or foreign bodies. Reddened eyes can also derive from prolonged use of contact lenses and exposure to potentially irritating substances (eg dust, fumes, ammonia and chlorine).

If the symptom is associated with persistent pain, acute angle-closure uveitis, scleritis or glaucoma may be present. The appearance of a blood-colored spot, on the other hand, can be caused by sub-conjunctival hemorrhage.
