Indications BUSCOPAN ® Butylscopolamine

BUSCOPAN ® is indicated in the treatment of painful manifestations due to spasms and cramps of the gastro-intestinal and genitourinary tract.

Mechanism of action BUSCOPAN ® Butylscopolamine

The BUSCOPAN ® administered orally or rectally, is absorbed minimally, so that its systemic bioavailability is around 1%. However, this drug tends to concentrate mainly in the anatomical districts in which it exercises its therapeutic action (gastrointestinal tract, gall bladder, hepatobiliary duct, liver and kidney).

BUSCOPAN ® administered at the prescribed doses does not cross the blood-brain barrier, limiting the side effects associated with anticholinergics, and is mostly excreted in the kidney.

The symptomatic action of BUSCOPAN ® is expressed through the competitive action against acetylcholine on muscarinic receptors of the smooth muscles of the gastro-intestinal tract, responsible for excitation and muscle contraction.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

This study has shown that the active ingredient of BUSCOPAN ® can exhibit antispastic efficacy at intestinal level about 7 times higher than other spasmolytics. Probably this effect could be associated, as shown by the study conducted on human nerve cells, with the inhibitory effect exerted also on the neuronal nicotinic receptors of the ganglion of the enteric autonomic nervous system, supporting the inhibitory effect on muscarinic receptors of visceral musculature.

This study conducted on 118 patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome, showed how BUSCOPAN ® administered both in the form of coated tablets and suppositories - determines a significant improvement in intestinal pain and rectal discomfort threshold, especially in patients characterized by predominant diarrhea.

The study shows that the BUSCOPAN ® used on patients suffering from dyspepsia (recurrent pain and discomfort in the stomach), guaranteed an improvement in symptoms in 77% of the cases, thanks to the better gastric distension induced by the drug.
