E262 SODIUM DIACETATE or SODIUM ACETATE
Sodium acetate is the sodium salt of acetic acid. It is an acidifying compound that can be of natural or chemical origin. There are 2 subgroups:
- E262 (i) sodium acetate
- E262 (ii) sodium diacetate (a mixture of sodium acetate and acetic acid).
Acetates are used as preservatives and tampons.
They are contained in many food products.
They do not appear to have any negative side effects, since they are normal components of body cells.
They should only be avoided by those with a vinegar intolerance (which is very rare).
Not recommended for use by pregnant women and infants.
ADI DOSE: 15 mg per kg of body weight.
