Trichiasis - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Trichiasis consists in the pathological deviation of one or more eyelashes, which, being turned towards the inside, rub against the surface of the eyeball. This abnormal orientation causes intense eye pain and irritation; in addition, in the long run, it can lead to the formation of ulcers and corneal scars.

In most cases, trichiasis is idiopathic. However, among the possible known causes are chronic blepharitis, trachoma and distichiasis (accessory row of eyelashes). At the base of trichiasis there may also be the formation of secondary scars with trauma, post-surgical outcomes, ocular pemphigoid, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and chemical damage.
