Snacks or Sandwich with ham?

Many wonder if the classic sandwich with ham or a packaged snack is healthier for your child's snack.

The doubts arise from the fact that cured meats are held to contain high amounts of calories and fat (in particular saturated), while snacks are notoriously too rich in sugars.

In reality, between the two, the choice of sandwich with ham can be considered healthier for several reasons. First of all, as shown in the image, a small sandwich with cooked ham provides, for the same weight, fewer calories than industrial snacks. The quantity of lipids is also lower and - considering that in industrial products palm oil is widely used - their quality is generally better, with lower percentages of saturated fats and higher intake of omega-3 and omega-6. Another advantage of the ham sandwich lies in its higher content of noble proteins and some vitamins and mineral salts.

To the detriment of the sandwich with ham there are above all the quantities of sodium, the high flavor (which could accustom the child to appreciate very salty foods) and the presence of nitrates. A few slices of tomato or other vegetable inserted into slices in the sandwich could compensate for many of these defects, balancing the snack very well from a nutritional point of view.
