Possible causes of dry throat include laryngitis, pharyngitis, abscesses or chronic tonsillitis and infections of the upper respiratory tract, such as colds and flu. Intense physical exertion, vomiting, excessive coughing, smoking, inhaling irritating substances (eg atmospheric particulates, spray products, etc.), cold air and allergic reactions can also predispose to this manifestation. .

The dry throat can also be a consequence of prolonged exposure to irritating gastric acids that can flow back from the alimentary canal (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease).

If it appears at night or is more pronounced upon waking up, the dry throat could be related to the tendency to breathe with the mouth (snoring and sleep apnea), to overheating the environment in which it rests (especially in the winter months) or to dehydration.

The dry throat can also be a side effect induced by some drugs.

In rare cases, this manifestation may depend on cancer processes.
