E450-E451 Diphosphates and Pyrophosphates

E450a DIFOSPHATES, DISODIUM DIPHOSPHATE, PYROPHOSPHATES

E450 additives are a group of compounds formed by the combination of sodium, potassium and calcium salts together with phosphates.

They are all obtained synthetically.

They are mainly emulsifiers, stabilizers and acidity correctors.

These additives can be found in various products such as melted cheeses, canned meats, cooked sausages, cooked hams, prepared turkey meat, breaded and confectionery products, concentrated milk, powdered milk, potato flour, pudding preparations.

Diphosphates and pyrophosphates are to be consumed in moderation, because in large doses they can involve risks of hyperactivity, poor assimilation of minerals and also digestive problems.

At the moment, at the doses normally present inside the food, there are no negative side effects on human health. High concentrations of phosphates, on the other hand, could alter different metabolic processes.

Dose ADI: 70 mg per kg of body weight.
