Definition

Ovulation consists in the release of an egg from the ovary. This event occurs around the 14th day of the menstrual cycle, albeit with some intra and inter-individual variability. The perception of ovulation symptoms is even more subjective, while for signs there is greater uniformity. Some women, in fact, experience symptoms such as: tenderness in the pelvic area, abdominal cramps, slight vaginal bleeding, increased breast volume or its consistency and greater sexual desire, while for others ovulation occurs in a completely asymptomatic manner.

Furthermore, shortly before ovulation, it is very common to find changes in the cervical mucus, which becomes more abundant, clear and slippery, in some ways similar to egg white.

Further indications

A characteristic symptom of ovulation is the slight increase in basal temperature, which remains high by about half a degree until the start of the menstrual flow. In this regard it is possible to use a special digital thermometer and detect the basal temperature, either vaginally or rectally, every morning before getting out of bed. The data collected during each single cycle must be inserted in a simple graph: the chances of fertilization are maximum in the two or three days preceding the temperature peak. This ovulation symptom can also be particularly useful as a contraceptive method; in this case the couple must refrain from any sexual intercourse from the beginning of menstruation until the third day of temperature increase. All this by virtue of the fact that: there is no way to predict ovulation sufficiently in advance, spermatozoa can survive up to 3-4 days in the cervix, the egg has a maximum life of 12-24 hours and the day of ovulation can also vary considerably from one cycle to another (while the days that separate ovulation from the subsequent menstruation are always and in any case 14).

Besides learning to recognize the symptoms of ovulation, and in particular the changes of the cervical mucus, it is possible to use special kits sold in pharmacies, able to detect the hormonal variations that accompany it through an instant urine test.
