Freckles and freckles: what differences?

Freckles and freckles are very similar cutaneous spots, but in reality they have extremely different characteristics.

freckles

The freckles are small brownish dots, more or less roundish, flat (not detected and not infiltrated) with respect to the skin surface. Their formation is associated with an increase in the concentration of melanin in some points of the epidermis, due to an irregular production of pigment under the action of ultraviolet rays present in solar radiation .

The tendency to freckles is inherited from parents. These pigmented spots usually make their appearance from a young age and are common in those with fair skin and blond or red hair (phototype 1 and 2). The freckles appear above all in the areas exposed to light (face, upper parts of the thorax and upper limbs and décolleté).

Compared to freckles, the freckles have a lighter color and a seasonal variation, that is they typically accentuate in the summer, with exposure to the sun, and tend to fade during the winter season (they are not, therefore, permanent). The appearance of freckles can improve with the application of lightening creams and light peelings.

Freckles

Freckles are hyperchromic skin discoloration due to an increase in the number of melanocytes in the basal layers of the epidermis; the melanin produced in higher quantities, therefore, is concentrated in some cells. The freckles appear as flat or slightly raised specks, of a color that varies from light brown to dark and irregular shape.

Freckles can appear in different parts of the body, regardless of the exposure of the skin to sunlight : in general, they are evident in the face, shoulders, upper limbs and backs of the hands, but can also appear in areas hidden from light and at mucosal level.

Being of hyperpigmentation due to an accumulation of melanin, intense and prolonged exposure to the sun can accentuate and make these specks more numerous . Unlike freckles, they do not disappear in the winter period (they are permanent); in the case of freckles, then, the color change from summer to winter occurs, but in a less intense manner. Freckles can be removed by dermatologist with laser or diathermocoagulation.
