Vaginismus - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Vaginismus

Definition

Vaginismus is a reflex and involuntary contraction of one or more vaginal muscles, which hinders any form of penetration. Due to vaginismus, it is impossible to tolerate the insertion of a tampon, the digital exploration, the insertion of a menstrual cup or the entrance of the penis during sexual activity.

Vaginismus can present itself in a recurring or persistent way.

The causes that contribute to the onset of this reaction are many. Usually, vaginismus has a psychogenic origin and derives from the fear that sexual intercourse is painful. Vaginismus can also develop after periods of stress or can be associated with traumatic memories (first attempts at penetration or sexual abuse). Sometimes, it results from a set of educational factors that induce sexual inhibition.

The reflex narrowing of the vulva, perineum and vaginal orifice muscles can also accompany dyspareunia of any kind (including pelvic tumors, endometriosis, inflammatory pelvic diseases and senile vaginal atrophy).
