Birth of the Mojito

Mojito is a typical Havana drink, although the precise place where the birth of this drink took place is still a subject of discussion.

According to the findings, it seems that in Cuba, in the 16th century, a drink called "El Draque" was created after Francis Drake came. In 1586, following the naval incursion of the settlers in Cartagena de Indias, they headed for Havana. Unfortunately, various diseases began to decimate the crew (especially scurvy), so that a small group of sailors landed to Cuba to take possession of the popular medicines typical of the natives. They returned with "aguardiente de cana" (a kind of rum), lime, mint and sugar cane juice. In itself, the lime would have been sufficient to cure scurvy, but what no one could imagine is that it was (as with mint and cane juice) ingredients designed to correct the unpleasant taste of the "miracle alcoholic beverage ": El Draque

The actual Mojito was instead baptized (probably) by the Cuban population (a few decades later), based on the noun "Mojo", a typical lime-based condiment. Another theory is that it comes from "mojadito", which means "a little wet", or simply from "mojado", or "wet".
