Branched chain amino acids - they represent one of the most used supplements in sports practice. Their importance is due to the elevated muscular tropism that characterizes them, so as to represent more than 1/3 of the total amino acid pull at the muscular level. Like the other essential amino acids introduced with the diet, the branched are absorbed at the intestinal level, mainly duodenal, and released into the circulation to be subsequently distributed to the various tissues, while unlike the other amino acids they can skip the first hepatic metabolism and reach directly the muscle tissue. The times of digestion and absorption vary naturally depending on the complexity of the food, the size of the meal, varying from a few minutes for the synthetic product (supplement) to several hours for foods of different nature. The rapid intestinal transit and immediate bioavailability make the supplement particularly suitable for the various needs of the athlete.

The demand for these amino acids increases considerably during physical activity, especially when it is prolonged for prolonged periods, given the significant increase in oxidation levels, above all in relation to leucine, and the consequent decrease in plasma levels. In fact, it passes from an average requirement of about 83mg / kg / day in healthy individuals to 250mg / kg / day in competitive athletes who practice endurance sports. The importance of a correct assumption is mainly due to a:

The effectiveness of BCAAs in sports practice

Numerous studies are available in the literature, related to the experimentation of branched-chain amino acids in sports. From the careful critical re-reading of these researches, it is possible to note that only some of the proposed aims are actually satisfied, while for many others there is still a poor reproducibility and a low molecular characterization. If in fact the protective action - which is expressed with the reduction of markers of muscle damage (creatine kinase and lactic dehydrogenase) following physical exercise - and the pro energetic action seem to be unanimously accepted, the hormonal modulating capacity remains to be clarified and anti-fatigue. The results in this regard seem to be very contradictory, with research groups that show significant increases in testosterone and GH, with reduced levels of cortisol, already at a dosage of 0.2gr / kg / day and with others that even at significantly higher dosages fail to reproduce the same effect.

The anabolic action of the BCAAs is of growing interest and being characterized, which would be explained by inducing insulin secretion on one side and enhancing the intracellular signal on the other, with consequent stimulation on protein synthesis.

Partially characterized is also the anti-fatigue effect, which would be explained by a competition mechanism for transporters of the blood-brain barrier against tryptophan, an important substrate for the synthesis of serotonin, in turn involved (at high doses) in sedation phenomena and tiredness.

To date, branched-chain amino acids are used more for myoprotective and anti-fatigue than for hormonal effects, despite the first significant evidence of their anabolic effect.

Pre-workout intake: has been shown to be useful in reducing muscle damage caused by intense exercise and counteracting the feeling of fatigue. In this case it would be better to take the BCAAs with water and not with simple sugars, in order to avoid any phenomena of reactive hypoglycemia that could negatively affect performance. Instead it could be useful to use simultaneously maltodextrins or carbohydrates with a medium / low glycemic index, in order to be able to energetically support the performance and delay amino acid oxidation.
