Ephelides - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The freckles are small brownish skin spots, expression of an increase in the concentration of melanin in some points of the epidermis. Their formation always has a benign meaning.

The freckles can be more or less round and flat - therefore not detected or infiltrated - with respect to the skin surface.

The tendency to freckles is inherited from parents. These pigmented spots usually appear around 2-6 years of age and persist throughout life.

Freckles are typically accentuated with exposure to the sun and tend to regress in the absence of it. They appear mainly on the skin of the face, the upper parts of the thorax and upper limbs, preferring people with fair complexions, light eyes and blond or red hair (phototype 1 and 2). On the other hand, they do not occur on mucous membranes and on skin not affected by sunlight.

Although the appearance of freckles is very similar to that of freckles, the two skin alterations should not be confused. Freckles, in fact, are due to an irregular production of pigment (melanin) and an increase in melanocytes. The freckles also differ in their lighter complexion and seasonal variation (they become more pronounced in the summer, and then diminish during the winter season; freckles, on the other hand, are permanent).
