Pets: how to protect them from the heat

Cats and dogs suffer from excessive heat, especially when associated with high humidity. In fact, during the summer season, even pets can become dehydrated, heat-stroke and other dangerous consequences.

To prevent cats and dogs from becoming dehydrated, it is necessary to maintain a good air exchange and often top up their bowl with fresh water. As for dogs, walks should be avoided during the central hours of the day, when the sun is beating down. The asphalt also becomes hot and could burn the animal's paws: it is better to run it in the meadows and bring along a bowl and a bottle of water to sip as needed. If the dog is very hot and breathing heavily, it is advisable to wet the legs and head.

Leaving dogs, cats and other animals in the car is dangerous: the shade and the open windows are not enough to avoid the risk of dehydration. In summer, the temperature in the passenger compartment increases very quickly and our four-legged friend can be the victim of a heat stroke that can even lead to death.

Hyperthermia can be suspected when suddenly the animal begins to have a strange behavior, it breathes quickly and is not stable on its legs. In these cases, it is necessary to bring it in a cool and ventilated environment and start to cool the body with wet compresses on the body with fresh water, then bring it as soon as possible to a veterinarian.
