E558 - Bentonite

E558 BENTONITE

Bentonite is a compound of natural origin derived from volcanic rock.

It has an anti-caking and emulsifying function; It is a technological aid for dyes and can be used as a clarifying agent in the production of fruit juices.

Bentonite can be contained in various products: fruit juices, aromas. The main uses are recognized in the cosmetic sector.

At the moment there are no known negative side effects of bentonite on human health, but its aluminum content has imposed severe limitations.

The use of clays in supplements is not admissible due to the need to limit consumer exposure to aluminum food sources.

The prohibition of use as food additives established by Regulation (EU) 380/2012 for some ARGILLE (including bentonite) was dictated by the need to limit the exposure of the population to food intake of aluminum, a structural constituent of the clays, on the basis of EFSA's opinion that, by assessing the possible risks to human health deriving from its presence in food, it established the tolerable weekly dose at 1 mg / kg of body weight.
