Performance Anxiety - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Performance anxiety consists in the fear of the emergence of a difficulty in the most varied areas (work, school, relationship, sexual and sports), on the part of an individual who considers the success or achievement of a goal in such situations absolutely essential.

This phenomenon is directly related to the judgment of other people: for those suffering from performance anxiety, the result of a test must necessarily be positive; if this ideal of perfection is not achieved, the subject experiences a profound malaise.

In the sexual sphere, this phenomenon affects men and women who attribute a strong value to performance. Excessive anxiety can derive from the worry of not being up to the situation and the fear of disappointing the partner; this attitude prevents one from living peacefully the sexual relationship, bringing as a possible consequence a decrease in desire or a difficulty in reaching orgasm.

In the context of interpersonal relationships, performance anxiety manifests itself with the tendency to demonstrate acceptance, recognition and esteem. At school or work level, on the other hand, this event may arise due to the desire to prove that they are good to a parent during their studies or to be affirmed from a professional point of view.

In all cases, the event will be experienced by those suffering from performance anxiety in terms of approval-growth or disapproval-loss of self-esteem.

If not treated properly, this disorder can give rise to more serious conditions, such as generalized anxiety, panic attacks, obsessions and social phobia.
