Hip pain - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hip pain is a symptom that recognizes several causes. First of all, it can occur following trauma or chronic injury from later use. Hip fractures are very common in the elderly, particularly among those suffering from osteoporosis.

A pain felt in the groin may indicate a pathology affecting the hip joint, such as a contracture, a traumatic dislocation or an osteoarthritis, the latter being very common in the elderly. When the pain is rapid on the other hand, it is necessary to consider an infection or an inflammatory arthritis.

In some of these conditions, the pain evoked by the movement of the hip joint can be felt along the thigh up to the knee. In fact, it may happen that patients complain of knee pain, when the problem lies only in the hip.

Lateral hip pain can be caused by bursitis or tendonitis of the middle gluteus.

Other possible causes of hip pain include congenital dysplasia, sciatica with sciatica, osteonecrosis (or avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, and bone tumors involving the proximal femur or acetabulum.
