Emartro - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hemarthrosis is a shedding of blood within a joint.

In most cases, the blood fluid is collected following a severe traumatic event involving the joint capsule (eg knee distortions, laceration of ligaments, meniscal lesions and dislocations) and / or bone (fractures).

If it is mild, the hemarthrosis can be reabsorbed completely spontaneously; instead, conspicuous effusions are associated with pain, swelling and functional limitation of the affected joint.

Hemarthrosis can also occur in the presence of general diseases of the organism that lead to disorders of blood coagulation or ease of bleeding; this manifestation is particularly frequent in hemophilia, but can also occur in the context of scurvy and hemorrhagic purpura. Individuals with congenital or acquired blood coagulation disorders may present both post-traumatic and spontaneous hemarthrosis.

In more rare cases, the hemarthrosis may be due to tumors of the bone or joint structures (eg villonodular pigmentosa synovitis).
