Foods in which the addition of colorants is prohibited

Italian and EU regulations prohibit the use of dyes in the production of numerous food products.

Just to mention a few examples, it is forbidden to add dyes in olive oil (the addition of chlorophyll to enhance its color is considered a sophistication) and in other vegetable oils, in coffee (except instant flavored coffee), in milk and in cheeses (in some products titanium dioxide is added to enhance its white color), in wine (in some countries anthocyanins are added to enhance its red color), in pasta and gnocchi, in fruit juices and nectars.

According to the current legislative provisions, the foods that can be treated or not with the allowed dyes are listed in the directive 94/36 / CE; Official Journal L 237 and subsequent amendments.
