Definition

Mumps, more commonly known as mumps, is a viral infection that mainly involves parotids, two salivary glands placed just below the ears. The mumps affect mainly children between the ages of 5 and 15, with symptoms that typically occur after 2-3 weeks from infection and include: fever, headache and swelling of the glands (salivary) parotid glands. About one in five people with epidemic mumps does not develop any symptoms of the disease.
