The hypodermis is the deepest layer of the skin. It is also known as subcutaneous adipose tissue or adipose panniculus.
The lobules are anatomical structures made up of cellular clusters, called adipocytes, rich in triglycerides. A small amount of fundamental substance is interposed between one adipocyte and another.
The hypodermis, which is richly vascularized and innervated, covers particularly important functions:
- it is the body's main energy store.
- Participates in thermoregulation, hindering heat loss from the body and generating it through the oxidation of triglycerides.
- Provides mechanical protection against trauma.
- Model the body shape.
- Influences body metabolism through the release of hormone-like substances.
