In normal pressure glaucoma, the optic nerve is damaged despite intraocular pressure is within apparently normal limits.
The disease appears to depend on poor blood flow to the optic nerve, which causes atrophy of the nerve fibers. This can be caused by atherosclerosis or another condition that limits blood circulation.
