What are the advantages of transdermal patches?

Compared to drugs taken by mouth or by injection, transdermal administration has several advantages.

The transdermal pathway allows regular contributions of the active principle for a prolonged and constant period, without significant variations; the plasma concentration of tablets and tablets follows, instead, a bell curve. The passage through the skin, then, allows to reduce the possible loss of pharmacological substance that can occur during the first hepatic passage (therefore for the metabolization by the liver). Furthermore, transdermal administration bypasses the digestive system: absorption cannot be compromised by the food consumed or by variations in acidity, as the drug does not pass through the stomach and intestines.

The use of the transdermal patch does not require any intake by mouth, therefore they represent an alternative for people who are unable to take medications orally due to swallowing problems, digestive disorders (eg vomiting, diarrhea etc.) or for the simultaneous use of other drugs that could reduce the effect of the active ingredient.

The transdermal patch is convenient to apply and can also prevent any forgetfulness when taking a drug regularly. Finally, to stop any adverse effects or if poorly tolerated, simply remove it.
