Ticks: what precautions can be taken?

If you are planning a trip to an area where there may be ticks (in the countryside, in a forest or in meadows with tall grass ) it is good to take some precautions to reduce the possibility of coming into contact with them.

First of all, it is useful to wear a hat, long pants, closed shoes and thick socks, shirts or long-sleeved shirts. The clothes should preferably be light in color (makes it easier to identify dark-colored pests).

It can also be useful to apply insect repellent (based on DEET and permethrin), such as those used against mosquitoes, all over the body. It is also best to avoid walking or sitting where the grass is higher or near bushes.

Once back home, it is advisable to inspect the skin of the body well, especially in areas where ticks tend to settle more: nape, arms, legs (especially in the back of the knees), abdomen and back. The parasite is easily felt by touch, passing the hand over the skin (it can be confused with a mole). Even the clothes must be checked and, if you fear to have picked up a tick, you must wash them at least 60 degrees.
