Indications GENTALYN BETA ® Gentamicin + Betamethasone

GENTALYN BETA ® is indicated in the treatment of allergic or inflammatory lesions of the skin characterized by overlapping bacterial infections or by the high risk of infection.

Clinically, this medicine has proved particularly effective in the treatment of eczema, various types of dermatitis, intertrigo and recurrent itching.

Mechanism of action GENTALYN BETA ® Gentamicin + Betamethasone

The therapeutic efficacy of GENTALYN BETA ®, which today makes it one of the most clinically used drugs in the treatment of dermatitis, is due to the presence of two active ingredients with different therapeutic characteristics.

Gentamicin is in fact an antibiotic belonging to the aminoglycoside family, capable of performing a dose-dependent bactericidal action through the inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis, guaranteed by the ability to selectively inhibit the 30S ribosomal subunit thus compromising the elongation of the peptide chains.

Betamethasone is instead a synthetic corticosteroid capable of carrying out an intense anti-inflammatory activity, necessary for the symptomatology to regress readily, guaranteed by the inducing action against lipocortin, a protein useful to block the cascade of enzymatic reactions necessary to convert precursors such as acid arachidonic in chemical mediators with pro-inflammatory activity.

The absorption of the active ingredients via the skin also makes the treatment particularly simple to implement, thus optimizing the therapeutic efficacy and at the same time reducing the side effects generally associated with oral therapy.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

1. OTOTOXICITY OF GENTAMYCIN AND BETAMETASONE IN PATIENTS WITH MENIER SYNDROME

Laryngoscope. 2002 Apr; 112 (4): 689-95.

An interesting study that demonstrates how topical use of products based on gentamicin-betamethasone may be ototoxic especially in patients suffering from tympanic membrane pathologies, already predisposed to the onset of hearing and balance disorders.

2. COLLAGEN-GENTAMYCIN INEFFICACY IN THE PREVENTION OF POST-SURGICAL COLORECTAL INFECTIONS

N Engl J Med. 2010 Sep 9; 363 (11): 1038-49. Epub 2010 Aug 4.

Recent multicenter study demonstrating that the use of gentamicin-collagen is not effective in preventing surgical site infections following colorectal surgery, on the contrary increasing the risk of bacterial infections.

3.OTOTOSSICITY OF ANTIBIOTICS

Int J Clin Pract. 2006 Sep; 60 (9): 1115-9.

Work that highlights the potential ototoxicity of antibiotics used by the skin or in the form of eye drops. Unfortunately, even gentamicin has proved to be such, especially in all those patients with a history of otorhinolaryngology.

Method of use and dosage

GENTALYN BETA ®

Topical cream with 0.1% gentamicin and betamethasone (0.166 grams of gentamicin sulphate and 0.122 g of betamethasone 17-valerate per 100 grams of product)

Generally the application of the cream 2-3 times a day on the affected area, is able to guarantee a prompt remission of the symptomatology in progress.

If this application proves to be ineffective, an occlusive bandage could be used to increase the trancutaneous absorption of the two active ingredients.

Before using GENTALYN BETA ® it is necessary to consult your doctor.

Warnings GENTALYN BETA ® Gentamicin + Betamethasone

Prolonged use of GENTALYN BETA ®, especially if performed with the occlusive bandage technique, could expose the patient to the risk of dermatological hypersensitivity reactions, sometimes even serious.

Patients suffering from renal, musculoskeletal and auditory-vestibular pathologies should pay particular attention to the use of GENTALYN BETA ® by undergoing periodic checks throughout the therapeutic process.

The inadequate use of antibiotics could facilitate the spread of microbial strains resistant to common antibiotic therapy, thus aggravating the clinical course of the disease.

Given the presence of betamethasone the use of GENTALYN BETA ® should take place with particular care in pediatric patients given the greater sensitivity to hormonal changes induced by cortisone therapy.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

Given the presence of corticosteroids and antibiotics such as gentamicin, whose exposure during gestation was associated with the appearance of serious side effects, the use of GENTALYN BETA ® is contraindicated during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding.

Interactions

The topical use of gentamicin and betamethasone allows to minimize the potential pharmacological interactions with other active ingredients able to compromise the therapeutic efficacy and the relative safety.

Contraindications GENTALYN BETA ® Gentamicin + Betamethasone

The use of GENTALYN BETA ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient, to structurally related drugs and to the relative excipients.

The presence of corticosteroids widens the contraindications even to patients suffering from cutaneous tuberculosis and viral diseases with cutaneous localization.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

The use of GENTALYN BETA ® is usually well tolerated and only rarely associated with adverse reactions.

These side effects generally involve the skin region subjected to the treatment affected by dryness, itching, irritation and hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, striae, miliaria and skin atrophy.

The aforementioned reactions are more frequently observed following the use of the occlusive bandage technique.

Note

GENTALYN BETA ® is a prescription medicine drug.
