Hyperlipidemia

The term hyperlipidemia indicates a generic increase in the levels of one or more fats (or lipids) in the blood.

Since both cholesterol and triglycerides are fats, the word can define an increase in blood levels of one or both.

Hyperlipidemias can therefore be classified into:

  • hypercholesterolemia: increased cholesterol content in the blood beyond normal limits;
  • combined hyperlipidemia: elevated blood levels of triglycerides and cholesterol;
  • hypertriglyceridemia: excess of triglycerides in the blood;
