Osteophytes - Causes and Symptoms

Related articles: Osteophytes

Definition

Osteophytes are small pathological growths of bone tissue, generally in the shape of a beak or crest. Their presence is a typical sign of erosive joint diseases; in fact, osteophytes typically develop in the case of osteoarthritis, but can also occur in the context of other degenerative or inflammatory joint diseases (eg rheumatoid arthritis).

The formation of osteophytes is a reaction of the bone tissue, which tries to establish a greater contact surface between the worn joint bodies. However, the presence of osteophytes in the joint margins can help to increase pain and limit joint movements. In some cases, they can even cause mechanical obstructions or compress nearby structures.
