Tingling in Hands - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Tingling in the hands is an annoying sensation, which can depend on multiple causes.

This symptom can affect only one hand or both. The tingling can also manifest itself in association with loss of sensitivity to the fingers, cold or warm hands, weakness, numb and tingling sensations, in the absence or in the presence of pain.

The tingling localized to the right or left hand can be a consequence of the compression of the ulnar nerve, of the incorrect posture (eg prolonged use of the computer mouse or the taking of particular positions during the night rest) and of the execution of intense efforts and repetitive work in the day course.

When it occurs in both hands, on the other hand, this sensation could be due to a circulation problem (eg vasculitis, Raynaud's phenomenon, etc.), especially if it is continuous and persistent. Furthermore, the origin of tingling in the hands can be attributed to various cardiac disorders, such as myocardial infarction and hypotension.

Tingling in the hands can also result from lesions of the sensory nerves, central or peripheral neuropathy, transient ischemic attack (TIA) and multiple sclerosis.

In diabetes mellitus, tingling takes on a characteristic glove distribution and is associated with a burning sensation.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is characterized by pain and paraesthesia, especially at night, at the wrist level, with hand irradiation; these symptoms are followed by functional impotence with reduced holding force.

Tingling in the hands may depend on arthritic degenerative processes, De Quervain syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, thoracic outlet syndrome and spinal problems, especially of the cervical tract.

The possible causes also include an excess of stress and anxiety; hyperventilation syndrome triggered by a panic attack typically causes paresthesia in the hands, feet and perioral region, with agitation, dizziness, spasms and weakness.

The tingling in the hands can be part of the symptomatic picture of thyroid pathologies (including Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis and hypothyroidism), vitamin deficiencies (in particular of vitamin B12), infections (such as St. Anthony's fire) and some tumors (eg . breast cancer). During pregnancy, this condition can manifest itself due to water retention.

Alcohol abuse and some medications can also cause the problem.
