Hypercosis - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Hypercifosis is a sagittal deformity of the spine; it consists of the anomalous accentuation of the thoracic curve, which gives the back a convex appearance (hump).

As a rule, the vertebral column has a slight degree of physiological curvature in the thoracic (dorsal) part. However, when the angle of this curvature exceeds 35 ° one speaks of hypercyphosis, also called curved spine or, in popular language, hump. Therefore a "curved back" appearance is determined.

Kyphosis may be congenital (due to abnormal vertebral growth; eg Scheuermann's disease or osteochondrosic kyphosis) or develop over time due to different pathological processes. The acquired form can be caused by rickets, osteoporosis, degeneration of the intervertebral discs, ankylosing spondylitis, tumors, chronic contraction of the muscles that insert on the vertebrae or by compression due to a fracture of the anterior part of the vertebral body.

In some cases, excessive curvature in the upper part of the spine results from the recurrence of postural defects (common in school-age children).
