Snoring - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Snoring is the emission, during sleep, of a hoarse and annoying sound associated with respiratory activity.

The causes can be attributed to the difficulty in passing the air flow during breathing, which may depend on the presence of enlarged adenoids and tonsils, a deviation of the nasal septum or the accumulation of secretions at the level of the upper respiratory tract.

Frequently, snoring is a consequence of the loss of tone of the muscles of the soft palate, including those of the uvula, and of the consequent reduction of the lumen of the first airways; this is why the phenomenon is common in old age. Nasal polyps, rhinitis and sinusitis can also obstruct the nasal cavities and cause regular snoring.

Snoring is a typical symptom of sleep apnea, characterized by relaxation of the throat and upper airway muscles during sleep, with obstruction to the passage of air.

Predisposing factors are obesity (especially if excess fat is deposited around the neck), alcohol consumption, the use of drugs with sedative action, macroglossia and retrognathia (presence of a small chin moved backwards ).

The specialist otorhinolaryngology assessment can ascertain the origin of this event. In the most serious cases, a surgical intervention can be indicated that restores the correct ventilation and removes the causes of the roncopatia (es. Adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy or septoplasty).

Some believe that closing the nasal passages by opening the mouth can alleviate the noise produced by snoring
