Subungual hyperkeratosis - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

Subungual hyperkeratosis is a deformity of the nail characterized by the keratinization of the nail bed and / or hyponymy. Consequently, near its distal margin, the nail plate appears thickened and raised by an accumulation of scales. This deposit can be of various thickness, more or less adherent and of a white-yellowish or silvery-white color.

Possible consequences of subungual hyperkeratosis are onycholysis (detachment of the nail) and "crumbling" of the nail plate. Subungual hyperkeratosis is often associated with microtraumatism or a fungal infection (onychomycosis). Furthermore, it is a very frequent and characteristic sign of nail psoriasis.
