Swelling, redness, heat or pain on palpation of the scrotum - Causes and Symptoms

Definition

The swelling of the scrotum, accompanied by erythema, pain on palpation and sensation of heat, generally indicates the presence of local inflammation, such as orchitis or epididymitis.

These symptoms can also occur following testicular torsion and genital trauma. Swelling, redness, pain on palpation or heat of the scrotum may be due to sexually transmitted diseases (eg Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis infections ) or other infectious diseases, such as mumps and rubella.

In some cases, swelling and intense pain, associated with scrotal or perineal erythema, vesicles and necrotic skin lesions, may indicate the presence of Fournier's gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum).
