Indications FORMISTIN ® - Cetirizine

FORMISTIN ® is used in the clinical setting for the symptomatic treatment of allergic manifestations, such as seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis or chronic idiopathic urticaria, affecting the respiratory system, the visual and skin.

Mechanism of action FORMISTIN ® - Cetirizine

The therapeutic action of FORMISTIN ®, particularly useful in the treatment of respiratory, dermatological and ocular manifestations of allergic pathologies, can be traced back to the presence of its active ingredient Cetirizine, a molecule belonging to second-generation H1 receptor antagonists, therefore equipped with a poor sedative and cardiotoxic effect.

Taken orally Ceterizina is rapidly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract, reaching maximum plasma concentrations within a few hours of its intake, maintaining its therapeutic activity for several hours, to the extent that daily administration is guaranteed.

Interacting at very high affinity with H1 receptors, it inhibits its functionality, thus controlling both the edema induced by the increase in vascular permeability at the capillary level, and the bronchospasm induced by the activation of bronchial smooth muscle receptors.

After its biological action, without binding the liver to a particularly intense metabolism, Cetirizine is largely eliminated by the urine.

Studies carried out and clinical efficacy

USE OF CETIRIZINA

Prescrire Int. 2010 Feb; 19 (105): 26-8.

Interesting study that concludes that Cetirizine represents a first choice antihistamine, despite great caution it should however be required in patients suffering from cardiac pathologies rather than neuro-psychiatric ones.

SUCCESS RATE OF TREATMENT WITH CETYRIZINE

Nagoya J Med Sci. 2008 Aug; 70 (3-4): 97-106.

A study that demonstrates that treatment with Cetirizine at 10 mg daily for two weeks can guarantee first and foremost a remission of symptoms related to chronic idiopathic urticaria in about 74% of treated patients, reaching 83% after another 2 weeks.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY ACTION OF CETIRIZINA

Allergy Asthma Proc. 2008 Sep-Oct; 29 (5): 480-5. doi: 10.2500 / aap.2008.29.3156.

Work that demonstrates how Cetirizine can also exert an antihistamine action which also characterized an anti-inflammatory activity against airway cells, modulating the secretion of cytokines responsible for inflammation.

Method of use and dosage

FORMISTIN ®

10 mg coated tablets of Cetirizine dichloridate;

Oral drops of 10 mg of Cetirizine dichloridate per ml of solution.

FORMISTIN ® therapy should be defined by your doctor based on the physio-pathological characteristics of the patient, his age and the severity of the clinical picture.

Despite the daily dose of 10 mg of Cetirizine, it is generally well tolerated and effective in adults, the doctor should consider the possibility of modulating it finely in patients suffering from liver disease and nephropathies of medium-severe magnitude.

Warnings FORMISTIN ® - Cetirizine

The correct therapeutic approach should first and foremost include a careful medical examination aimed at clarifying the nature of the symptomatology, the prescriptive appropriateness and the possible presence of conditions such as to adapt the therapy itself.

In this regard, particular caution in the prescription of FORMISTIN ®, should be reserved for affected patients liver, kidney, heart and neurological diseases given the greater incidence of potential side effects.

It is also useful to remember that the presence of hydroxybenzoates in the oral drops formulation could determine the development of hypersensitivity reactions in predisposed patients.

FORMISTIN ® in tablets contains lactose, therefore its intake is not recommended in patients with glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome, lactase enzyme deficiency and hereditary galactose intolerance.

In order to obtain adequate results, it is recommended to stop taking antihistamines at least 48 hours before allergy tests.

Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.

PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING

The use of FORMISTIN ® during pregnancy and in the subsequent period of breastfeeding, should occur elusively in cases of inevitable necessity and always under the careful medical supervision, given the absence of clinical trials able to characterize the profile with absolute certainty safety of Cetirizine on the fetus and infant

Interactions

Although pharmacological interactions such as to compromise the therapeutic efficacy of FORMISTIN ® are not currently known, it would be advisable to avoid alcohol intake during drug treatment.

Contraindications FORMISTIN ® - Cetirizine

The use of FORMISTIN ® is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or to one of its excipients or to other structurally related molecules and in patients suffering from severe liver disease and nephropathy.

Undesirable effects - Side effects

The use of Cetirizine, especially when prolonged over time, could expose the patient to diarrhea, hypertransaminasemia, asthenia, malaise, agitation and dermatological reactions from hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or its excipients.

Fortunately, the neurological effects characterized by headache, sedation and drowsiness are such that driving is dangerous.

Note

FORMISTIN ® is a drug subject to mandatory medical prescription.
