ADHD: unexpected strengths of patients

For years, doctors and experts have studied attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ( ADHD ) in terms of symptoms (drop in concentration, impulsiveness, restlessness, etc.), of abnormal behaviors assumed by the patients, of therapy and of triggering or favoring factors .

Since, however, they have discovered that the ADHD patient presents with some frequency also some curious abilities, they have begun to focus part of their studies precisely on these unexpected abilities, which can also be defined as "positive aspects" or "strengths" of the disease.

After several investigations, it emerged that:

  • Patients with the inactive ADHD variant (that is, where inattention and concentration decline prevail) may be particularly:

    • Creative and artistic
    • Intelligent and insightful
    • determined
    • Skilled in so-called problem solving situations
  • Patients with the hyperactive-impulsive ADHD variant (ie the one in which hyperactivity and impulsiveness prevail) may be unexpectedly:

    • energetic
    • Eager to always try new things
    • Hard workers
    • Perseveranti
  • Regardless of the variant, some ADHD patients may also be distinguished by:

    • Flexibility in the face of the various situations that arise
    • Innovative ideas
    • Improvisation ability
    • Vivid imagination
    • Ability to link things or situations together apparently without any correlation
    • Strong sense of justice and fairness
    • Strong sense of humor

The current objective of those who study ADHD is to establish how and if there is a consequential relationship between the disease and the aforementioned skills .

According to the latest research, attention deficit syndrome would be a neuropsychic disorder with a probable alteration of dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission .

That this particular alteration can bring certain abilities to people with ADHD? Or is it a pure coincidence?
