Definition

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of autoimmune origin, which affects the central nervous system and in particular the myelin coating that protects nerve fibers. This degenerative process interferes with normal communication between the brain and the rest of the body, resulting in severe disability (eg inability to walk or talk). However, the symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary considerably depending on the severity of the damage and its location. The disease, which can occur at any age, affects mainly adults and young adults, especially those of women.

Further indications

The course of multiple sclerosis is typically characterized by a succession of remissions and relapses, which tend to slow down the diagnosis. A patient suffering from multiple sclerosis can complain of symptoms such as: numbness or weakness of one or more limbs, generally of only one side of the body; double or blurred vision until the partial or total loss of vision; pain during eye movements; tingling in various parts of the body; dizziness; tremors and lack of coordination of movements, all symptoms that may interfere with normal walking; muscle pain and weakness up to paralysis; cognitive deficits; perception of electrical discharges during certain head movements.
